Crowns
Why a crown?
Dental crowns or caps fit around the entire tooth like a thimble on a finger, reliably repairing teeth that are heavily decayed or broken. This same feature strengthens teeth that have dangerously large fillings.
From a cosmetic view, crowns can predictably change the shape and color of one or several teeth, making them useful for a custom smile makeover.
What are the other options?
Unfortunately, there aren’t many alternatives to a crown. Teeth that have a cavity or filling big enough to indicate a crown are not very stable over a long period of time. Not crowning a fragile tooth can lead to a cracked tooth that will then have to be extracted.
If this does happen, a bridge, implant, or partial denture are all excellent options to replace the missing tooth.
